It's Time to Nominate!

By now you have all become experts in the issues of your chosen country. Now it is time to learn about other countries around the world.

1.) Read/Skim your classmates' blogs: You won't have time to read EVERY post from EVERY blog, but try to at least view and skim each blog. Pay the most attention to what Human Rights issues are going on, and what each classmates' proposal ideas are.

2.) Choose your Top 10 Proposals: Make another post/entry listing your Top 10 choices. Each proposal should be nominated based on urgency of the Human Rights Issue, and how in depth and realistic their proposal ideas are. Make sure you post the link to each blog you nominate and EXPLAIN WHY you nominated each blog.

Egypt: A Modern Day Revolution! (by Monday, Feb. 21)

Respond by: Monday, Feb. 21

The biggest world news for the past couple weeks has been the revolution going on in Egypt. Thousands of Egyptians are protesting against the current ruler (considered by many a dictator), Mubarak, demanding that he leave office and be replaced with a democratic government. Before the protests in Egypt began, a similar revolution took place in the Northern African country of Tunisia, inspiring many Egyptians to do the same by standing up for their rights.

Respond to these questions:

#1: Read this article to understand WHY Egyptians began protesting. Why were they upset at Mubarak? How were Egyptian citizens being treated? What kind of system were they hoping for? What happened when they didn't receive that type of government?

#2: Check out this picture of Christians protesting Muslims who stopped to pray during the protests (remember, Muslims typically pray to Allah 5 times a day). Reflect on this picture. What do you think about these two religions coming together to try to change a broken government system?

#3: Thursday morning, Egyptian protests were under the impression that Mubarak was going to announce his resignation, or that he was planning to leave his position as leader. However, in his speech this morning, he announced that he was NOT going to resign after all! Click here to watch the video of his speech. THEN, the next day, it was announced that he WOULD resign after all! Reflect on the fact that the Egyptian protesters were successful in their revolution. (What would it feel like to know you have successfully changed or revolutionized your own country? What do you think will happen now? Was this a good idea, bad idea, or both and why? Tell us your thoughts....)

#4: Read the journal of this college student from Boston who was studying abroad in Cairo when the protests were happening. Reflect on what it might have been like to be in Egypt during this time period. (How would you have felt? What would you have done? Do you know or have heard of anyone else who was in Egypt recently? How has this revolution in Egypt affected you?)

Make sure you answer all FOUR questions!!! And keep watching the news, feel free to post any articles or video clips you find with new info, I'm sure there will be new updates every day!

Minneapolis Metrodome Roof Collapses from TOO MUCH SNOW! You gotta see this!

I just got off the phone with my mom who told me they have almost 20 inches of snow...that's almost two feet! And that is actually a lot for Minnesota! Most people were stuck inside their houses for 2 days straight and temperatures are way below zero. Some still haven't been able to dig their cars out of the snow after they were buried underneath it!

But seriously, watch this video of the Minneapolis sports dome, which has a "bubble-like" structure for a roof...

State, Nation, Other: Puerto Rico tries to decide - Respond by Tues. Nov. 9!

Oh, no....not politics!! YES, we are going to go there this time. This issue in Puerto Rico has still not been resolved and guess what...all of YOU will most likely be making this decision in the future!

Read this article from the PR Daily Sun and respond by answering some of these questions. You MUST refer to the article in your comment so that we all know that you have read it! For example... "I thought it was crazy how the political candidate from Idaho thought Puerto Rico was a COUNTRY, and didn't even care!!!" or "I know what they mean about the passport question, people asked me that when I went to the states..."

  • Have you had a similar experience to Dayra Rivera's? If so, exlain...
  • What do you think about other peoples' knowledge (or lack thereof) of Puerto Rico?
  • Does Puerto Rico's political status confuse you? How? What about the social status? Is PR more American or more Puerto Rican? Explain...
  • The BIG question: What do you think PR should do...become a state, become independent, stay the same, other?? Explain...
  • Share this article with your parents or other family members, what do they think?
  • Any other reactions, thoughts, questions, opinions that you have to this issue...

You should also start responding to your classmates' comments. Remember, this is a DISCUSSION with the whole class, not just with yourself. For example, "I really agree with ______ because _____." Or "I see the point that _____ is making, but I disagree because ________." As always, BE RESPECTFUL!!
